OSS 117 aka Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath
Although OSS 117 is usually referred to in Anglophone countries as "The French James Bond", creator Jean Bruce wote the first OSS 117 adventure in 1949 predating Ian Fleming by four years. The first screen adventure also beat Bond to the screen in 1956.
With 205 OSS 117 novels published there is no shortage of material for screenplays. Several films were made that were based on Bruce's novels but for legal reasons used a different character name. These include "Cinq gars pour Singapour" and "Les bal des espions." Other films were OSS 117 adventures in all but name using the same actors. (e.g."Agent 505 - Todesfalle Beirut" and "Un killer per sua maestà")
The 21st Century spoofs with Jean Dujardin are impressively exacting recreations of the Eurospy genre.
